We are thrilled to announce that we have two finalists in this year’s national Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year (LALY) awards. Emma McClure has been shortlisted in the Criminal Defence category (which includes prison lawyers) and Yasmin Karabasic is a finalist in the Best Newcomer category, which is open to nominees from all areas of legal aid work.
The Legal Aid Practitioners Group organises the LALYs to celebrate the work of outstanding legal aid lawyers to mark their contribution to social justice. The winners in nine categories will be announced at a prestigious ceremony in central London on 4 July.
LAPG CEO, Chris Minnoch, said:
"Reading about the achievements of this year’s finalists really tells you everything you need to know about the breadth, depth and importance of the work done by those on the legal aid frontline. And they do so despite the considerable barriers presented by the legal aid scheme, such as low fees and the recent data breach impacting on all areas of legal aid work. Their nominations are a testament to the professionalism, resilience and expertise, not just to them, but of the entire social justice sector. We at LAPG send our warmest congratulations to everyone shortlisted."
SL5 director, Andrew Sperling, said:
"We are extremely proud of Emma and Yasmin. It is a huge achievement to make the list of finalists for the LALY awards. Their nominations are just reward for their brilliant work, their commitment and the difference they make every day. They are the product of many wonderful testimonials provided by clients and their families, barristers, expert witnesses and campaigners."
