Yasmin Karabasic recently represented a client serving a lengthy Extended Determinate Sentence at his first Parole Board review, following almost ten years in custody.
The case presented significant challenges. The review process spanned almost three years, was subject to several adjournments, and was further complicated by the client's return to closed conditions following significant allegations, which he strongly disputed.
Considerable work was undertaken to address these issues and to ensure that the case was thoroughly prepared for hearing.
At the hearing, there was a range of professional recommendations regarding the client's suitability for release. Following consideration of the evidence, the Parole Board directed the client's release.
This case highlights the importance of careful preparation, persistence and effective advocacy in complex parole proceedings, particularly where disputed allegations arise during the course of a review and where professional recommendations are divided.
The client subsequently provided the following feedback:
"Yasmin was absolutely superb. I cannot fault her on anything. She did a great job given all the complications in my case and got me the result I needed. I'll be forever grateful and indebted to her and the company. Thank you Yas, you are a gem."
