Andrew Sperling is an accredited facilitator for the Law Society’s Advocacy and the Vulnerable Training. This training was developed in conjunction with the Bar Council to help solicitor advocates and barristers strike the balance between advancing their client’s case effectively in court whilst ensuring vulnerable witnesses are not subjected to undue stress. It incorporates an extensive case study and role-play exercise aimed at developing questioning skills and understanding of the needs of vulnerable witnesses. It is anticipated that the Ministry of Justice will make this training compulsory for all publicly-funded advocates before they can act in serious sexual offences cases.

The release of IPP prisoner James Ward was widely reported today. In another part of the country, one of my IPP clients was also released today. He has also served over eleven years, nine years longer than the minimum term which was imposed by the Judge who sentenced him. The Parole Board directed his release nearly four months ago. His hearing took place eight months later than it should have done. He has been waiting since June for a place to become available at an ‘Approved Premises’. The sentence will continue to hang over him for at least ten more years. He could be recalled to prison at any time. On 7 September, SL5's Andrew Sperling visited the new Public Protection Casework Section (PPCS) headquarters in Croydon to meet with their case managers. Andrew was there to discuss: the challenges facing legal representatives in the current parole system the challenges facing prisoners with learning difficulties, disabilities, mental health problems and issues associated with ageing, in progressing through the penal and parole system This was an excellent opportunity to meet with civil servants who make decisions and manage administrative processes which have a significant impact on the progression of prisoners.
